Are you looking for a charming Menorcan fishing village to discover with your family?
One image that people recall from their visit to Menorca is that of quaint whitewashed houses with little chimneys and the intense colour of the sea, ranging from sky blue to an amazing turquoise. There’s a place on the island that combines these two picture postcards to perfection, and where your kids will have a great time exploring the narrow streets: Binibeca Vell.
Here at Bini Hotels we thoroughly recommend that you visit this lovely place on the south coast of Menorca with your family. Built 46 years ago, it looks just like a really charming and typical fishing village, with cute little houses shining bright white in the sun with dark green shutters. These were designed before any tourists really started to visit the island.
A storybook setting in Menorca
The streets are narrow, for pedestrians only with no cars able to use them, and they make up a fun labrynth which children will love. There are a couple of tree-shaded plazas to relax and cool down in too.
The signs posted that request silence shouldn’t surprise you as, although this a storybook village, people actually live in the houses.
To one side lies the seafront and port, with boats of small draft just waiting for their owners to hop aboard and carry on discovering the surrounding areas, and then there are the more sporty kayakers. This part of the southern Menorcan coast has gentle rockfaces, crystal-clear water and little bays to stop in on the way
Restaurants and bars liven up this picturesque spot in Menorca, where there are also shops selling typical island products including locally made fashion jewellery and pottery.
Don’t forget to take your camera on this family excursion, it’s where you’ll snap some of your favourite summer pics.
A family beach to enjoy after the wood
There’s no bay in the village but nearby, a kilometre away, is Binibeca beach, which you reach via a small wood and takes about 5 minutes to walk through.
There’s also a parking area just as you reach the beach and, among the trees on the path leading down, you will spot picnic area which is the perfect place to enjoy either lunch or a light snack in the shade.
The beach has pale white sand and fabulous clear transparent water which tempts you have a dip or go snorkelling near the rocks. It’s perfect for children as it’s shallow and also quite sheltered by a run of land to the left
As it is considered an urban beach, there are facilities such as sunbed and sunshade rental, a lifeguard service and a charming beach bar called “Los Bucaneros” to enjoy a cool drink at and admire the beautiful Mediterranean scenery.
How do we get to Binibeca Vell?
It is well signposted, although some of the sign may say “Binibèquer Vell”, which is the original name for this area. It is in the municipality of Sant Lluís and you will see the signs showing various urbanizations and beaches at the first exit from the La Pau roundabout.
It’s really easy to reach if you opted to stay at our apartments in Cala Canutells. Just take the coastal road heading for Sant Lluís and after 10 kms you’ll find this delightful fishing village which we’re sure you’ll be bowled over by. So how about you, which place in Menorca would you recommend for a family excursion?
